The Global Action Network Action Plan includes arranging annual meetings, workshops and events, recognizing interested parties, and establishing connections to promote collaboration and interaction among cross-sectorial actors focusing on the important elements for food security from Healthy Waters to Healthy People.

This mini-conference marked a renewed momentum following the extension of the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition to 2030. We highlighted the role of aquatic foods for resilient food systems, bridging with the UN Decade of Ocean Science (2025-2030). Moreover, identified important actions and opportunities to accelerate impact and scale solutions, showcasing knowledge and actions across the core dimensions of food security – improve access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious aquatic foods that meet dietary needs and food preferences, leaving no one behind. By providing a platform for stakeholders across food security, nutrition, fisheries, aquaculture, ocean science, and sustainable development, we facilitate the integration of aquatic foods into strategies for sustainable food systems, food security, and nutrition.

This workshop explored how nutrient composition varies within and across small pelagic species, how environmental and ecological drivers influence this variation, and what this means for food security and nutrition. It also examined how such knowledge can inform ecosystem-based fisheries management.

This side event brought together participants from across regions, including governments, UN agencies, research institutions, private sector actors, and young and local voices from Africa and beyond. The event highlighted the importance of integrating food security and nutrition into ocean governance and development cooperation, as well as the importance of aquatic food systems for food security, supporting livelihoods, improving diet quality, and building resilience. 

In 2026, the annual forum for the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) took place in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. As part of this forum, AAORIA and the UN Global Action Network on Aquatic Foods for Food Security and Nutrition co-hosted the joint session “AAORIA in Action: Sustainable Blue Economy and Food from the Ocean” 

The Global Action Network will continuously identify challenges, exchange knowledge and solutions related to the key elements of food security. Through the Gain and Share Tool, you can gain and share knowledge to promote sustainable food from the oceans and inland waters for food security and nutrition.

Fading livelihood of small-scale fishers in Kerala, India: experience among the shore seine fishers of Trivandrum

An immersive 2-month research training internship hosted by Christ University, Bangalore, India, among the shore seine fishers of Trivandrum highlighted the economic and ecological risks faced by the traditional fishing communities living on the South-Western Indian coast. An ethnographic study among the community pointed towards the possible extinction of the practice of shore seine fishing and the traditional knowledge linked with it. 

Low-Cost Airlift-Based Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) Demonstration at NFDB Shows Promising Results for Sustainable Fish Production

Machli Tech Pvt. Ltd. has successfully commissioned a low-cost airlift-based Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) demonstration unit at the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), India. Inaugurated by the Union Minister of Fisheries, the system achieved excellent growth and feed efficiency at a stocking density of 30 kg/m³ which can be further scaled up, demonstrating its potential for scalable and sustainable aquaculture.
